My husband runs hot. Not "oh I get a little warm" hot — we're talking a man who has taken his jacket off in 10 °F weather after walking 5 minutes up a hill. We're planning 16-18 days mostly in Tohoku — my interests are rural areas, historic/cultural sites, sake, and onsen. I’m worried about the potential for Japan’s notorious warm and humid weather, especially when I want my human radiator of a husband to actually enjoy the onsen, and not just suffer quietly while I bliss out.
Summer is obviously off the table, so I'm trying to pick between three windows and could use some advice:
Late Oct/Nov 2026 — Seems like obvious choice: great temps, fall foliage, my husband remains a solid rather than a liquid. BUT potentially the busiest? We do not like crowds (yes I know parts like Tokyo are unavoidable) so I’m fairly hesitant on this one since the region is known for leaf peepers.
May 2027 — Originally my first choice since it's around my birthday (post-Golden Week) and gives me the longest to brush up on my Japanese. But now I'm second guessing: is it already getting too hot/humid for an overheated person to enjoy onsen? Is it still fine?
February 2027 — Ideal temps, low crowds, but I'm worried about some of the sites I’m interested in being closed for the season. We will likely need to rent a car for some of the areas I’m planning on visiting, which could be extra challenging to navigate if it’s super snowy.
Anyone with Tohoku experience willing to weigh in? Is May actually fine or is there a compelling reason to bump the trip up? Are crowds in fall a bearable trade-off for the scenery?
