Asked to pay up front at karaoke?

This has never happened to me before in the past 11 years. At an utahiroba in Ikebukuro, my wife and I were asked to pay for free time up front. I noticed the japanese couple in front of us was not asked this. It has always been the case every time I go to karaoke (which is quite frequently) in the past 11 years, that you pay for everything at the end.

Anyway, paid for the free time up front which was weird, but got even weirder when we decided to order some food and when the food came, there was a little change jar and we were asked to pay for the food up front too. Luckily I had cash but like, what??? Never have I had to pay for food upon it being delivered during karaoke. It's always always just one bill at the end. This just felt really discriminatory and it really put a damper on a fun night out.

Definitely sticking to my usual quiet suburban karaoke spots from now on. Really miserable time. Has anyone else experienced this? Why?
