Is a day trip to Kagoshima from Fukuoka or Nagasaki Possible?

Hi everyone! I'm planning my first trip to Japan and was hoping to do a day trip to Kagoshima from Fukuoka or Nagasaki. Is it possible to do it as a day trip from either location? I could do one less night in Fukuoka or Nagasaki and stay overnight in Kagoshima, but if a day trip is doable, I would prefer that. Thanks in advance!
