First things first, before someone attacks me, i know and agree fully well that Japan is still much more safer than majority of countries in the world including mine, and i am truly grateful to the opportunity to move here🙏.
Now, as a woman I value safety in public places a lot. And Sapporo was nothing short of magical. I remember taking walks alone at night and even in places like Susukino, i never faced harassment. I think in my 2 years in Sapporo, i got nanpa’d like 4 times and got harassed 2 times.
I moved to Nagoya last week and have been going out for shopping since past two days for home essentials, and in these two days the following incidents happened with me:
-
On JR gate tower mall, while approaching the escalator, two young boys blocked my way and started calling me “baby” loudly.
-
A man in his 50s started staring at me in the subway from top to bottom and then blatantly at my chest, i was wearing a low cut top. I gave him a disgusted look and turned around, but he just came forward and stood next to me. I got off at my station which was thankfully next.
-
was waiting to cross the road when two young boys pulled their car in front of me and made a really disgusting gesture with their mouth and lips and then laughed and sped away instantly.
-
A man pushed me to the side while i came out of the washroom and he was passing through, and gave me a disgusted look. I think this has more to do with racism.
In all of these situations, the perpetrators were Japanese.
I know there are people who have been living in Nagoya for very long, is this how this city is? I especially want to know women’s opinion on this.
