Daily Thread: for simple questions, minor posts & newcomers [contains useful links!] (April 05, 2026)

This thread is for all the simple questions (what does that mean?) and minor posts that don't need their own thread, as well as for first-time posters who can't create new threads yet. Feel free to share anything on your mind.

The daily thread updates every day at 9am JST, or 0am UTC.

↓ Welcome to r/LearnJapanese! ↓

  • New to Japanese? Read the Starter's Guide and FAQ.

  • New to the subreddit? Read the rules.

  • Read also the pinned comment below for proper question etiquette & answers to common questions!

Please make sure to check the wiki and search for old posts before asking your question, to see if it's already been addressed. Don't forget about Google or sites like Stack Exchange either!

This subreddit is also loosely partnered with this language exchange Discord, which you can likewise join to look for resources, discuss study methods in the #japanese_study channel, ask questions in #japanese_questions, or do language exchange(!) and chat with the Japanese people in the server.

  1. I’m a little confused on the actual difference in volitional forms.

What’s the de facto difference between

    行くと思っています, and 行こうと思っています

I got dinged on a practice test that the latter is “more” correct while the former is still understandable and not technically wrong

  2. Question about the keyboard

I always changed between kana and alphabet using ² (left of 1 on french keyboard) but today I had to reinstall windows 11 and it doesn’t work anymore.

I don’t care what is the shortcut that they want me to use, I want to change it and put it back on ², how can I do it ?

  3. Would appreciate some opinions. Ive been working through Kalshi 1.5k for just over 2 months, so far I’ve managed to go through around a 1/3 of the set with 995 to go.

I’m starting to notice that my review sessions are slowly taking longer and longer & was planning to halt any new cards for around 7 days and then just study and review the cards that I have. My logic here is that I want to try and get my leech / difficult cards a bit more attention.

I don’t intend to do this often but I’m not sure if this might be considered a “wrong” approach to anki of sorts. For reference this is my current breakdown of my Anki.

  4. Did the Yomitan clipboard monitoring feature break for anyone else? It’s not automatically populating the text stored in my clipboard in the search bar anymore for me.
