Advice on practicing for Japanese license conversion driving test (Kadoma, Osaka, no Japanese)

Hi everyone! I’m looking for advice on preparing for the Japanese driver’s license conversion test (外免切替), specifically the driving test. I'm from the US, but my state, New Jersey, doesn't have an agreement to transfer the license by paperwork alone. I must take the written and driving tests. So far, I have visited the driving center and had my documents approved to proceed.

I’m based in Minoh (north Osaka) and have an appointment at the Kadoma Driver’s License Center on April 30 for the written test. If I pass, I’ll schedule the driving test next.

I’ve read that it’s very common to fail the driving test at least once (or more), so I want to prepare as effectively as possible. I don’t speak Japanese, which makes things more challenging.

From what I’ve seen, one of the best strategies is to take a few practice lessons at a local driving school, ideally on a course similar to the test course. I’m hoping to find an instructor or school near Kadoma that:

  • Offers one-off lessons (not a full course)
  • Has experience helping foreigners with 外免切替
  • Ideally has some English support (but I’m open to managing without)

I’ve also read that it may be possible to reserve the actual test course at the license center for practice (for a fee). If that’s true, I’m wondering if it would make sense to go with a colleague or friend and practice there using their car.

A few questions:

  1. Do driving schools provide cars for these kinds of lessons, or do I need my own?
  2. Any recommendations for schools/instructors near Kadoma?
  3. Has anyone done this successfully without speaking Japanese?
  4. Has anyone reserved the actual test course, how does that work?
  5. Is it allowed to practice there with a friend’s car?

As a backup plan, I’m considering asking colleagues if anyone would be willing to help me practice (and I would compensate them), but I’m not sure how effective that is compared to proper instruction.

Any advice or experiences would be hugely appreciated — thank you!
