Looking for some help finding a ski/onsten town.

Hi everyone, I've been scouring through the reddit threads hoping to find a town that suits both my partner and I. Our last ski trip was the first time my partner skiied and she really enjoyed it in Furano.

For us, Furano was the best of both worlds because there were things we could sight see and lot of great restaurants in town (we stayed at the La Vista Furano Hills and loved the breakfast buffet there) and there werent many tourists at all. We always hire a car when travelling to Japan, and this time we're heading back to Japan around 16th Jan for the next 2 weeks. Last time in Furano it was early season around late Nov, so no japow at all and for her first lesson it was climbing a hill up and down with her skiis. During that trip, we also had the chance to explore Hakodate, Noboribetsu, Otaru, Sapporo. So we want to try something else. Recenty we came back from Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Shikoku in November so we're always looking to explore new areas.

This time, I've looked at Myoko, Nozawa, Shiga and Gifu area as I want this trip to not just be a ski trip, and we like onsens. I'm realistically looking around 4-5 nights in a ski resort town but so far from what I've been reading I'm not too keen on the towns that have been "Australianized/touristy". I was very confident about choosing Nozawa Onsen but everyone's been saying that its just not as local as it used to be. Also accomodation has been hard to find given how late I am researching at this trip.

Originally, I was thinking of the Nagano and Gifu area due to wanting to go to Kanzawa as well (I really want to go to Kanazawa), but I'm now thinking maybe its best we head to Iwate for Geto Koge, Zao Onsen, etc. and perhaps explore Niigata, Morioka, Aomori which I'm not sure what would be best in that area.

If anyone's got any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
