I’m a 32 year old born in Japan from a Filipino Mother and a Japanese Father. I was raised in the Philippines since I was 3 years old. And I only found out about the Japanese Rule of Only Having One Nationality just now. I have acquired the Japanese Nationality back at 2013 (I was 18 years old) and since then have been living in Japan. My Japanese passport will expire next year (2027) and I never had a Philippine Passport.
My questions are as follows:
Should I file for the Kokuseki Sentaku Todoke as soon as possible given that I am already 32 years old? And I’ve read somewhere that I should have done that a long time ago. Back when I was 20 years old.
What does the file look like and its process?
Will it have any complications with my renewal of Japanese Passport? Or keeping my Japanese Nationality?
For those who have been to similar situations as me, what was your experience when renewing your Japanese passport or generally trying to file the Kokuseki Sentaku Todoke?
