I've had this discussion here many times about how people who recommend engaging with media a lot to learn a language on the argument that it's fun. I tend to say back something like this:
Okay, but what percentage of people do you think finds it fun to engage with media they don't understand much of, or alternatively having to constantly do lookups and pause to make it understandable?
And every single time the question is either dodged in a follow up reply, or I get no follow reply at all. — To be clear, I'm putting my cards on the table here. This question is rhetorical. I believe that the answer is that only an incredibly small percentage of persons finds that enjoyable, and I believe that that is self-evident. But I never got an answer so who knows, maybe someone will say that I'm wrong and that in that person's experience people do find this fun and do it a lot. But I've never seen it so what's up?
