Miyajima’s Itsukushima Shrine. Don’t forget the Treasure Hall!

When visiting Miyajima Island and Itsukushima Shrine, don't forget there is a Treasure Hall that is part of the Shrine area. I was surprised to see very few people in the Treasure Hall when I went, as it only costs 300 yen to enter.

If you like museums, you'll really enjoy a quick stop in this small one. The collection is all in one long room, where you can see a variety of Samurai helmets, swords, musical instruments, along with stoneware and pottery such as Oribe plates and Bizen jars. There's also a hand fan which is thought to be the oldest in Japan dating to the 12th century, and a Sho flute believed to be the personal possession of the Emperor Takakura.

In addition, there are some displays related to how the Shrine was built, along with Noh costumes, Bugaku masks, and Omigoromo costumes for the Bugaku dance that is held at the shrine.

Things to be aware of:
1) Entrance fee is additional to Itsukushima Shrine's entrance fee.
2) You can't take photos inside.
3) You have to change into slippers to walk inside.
