Ended up with a refund on my taxes for the first time…have I been doing things wrong until now?

So yes I know im very late on doing my taxes. (Bad, I know)

This year I decided to file while consulting with ChatGPT (Bad, I know)

It had me realize that I may have been filing my taxes incorrectly these last few years. This would mainly be based around the dividends I make on US stocks and the foreign tax exemption.

Basically I had about $4k is stock dividends. I reported those, as well as took the foreign tax credit for the 10% the US takes.

I ended up getting a refund of about 120,000 JPY. In the past two years or so, I actually was paying near that amount back to the government. But part of that is because I did not realize I could get the foreign tax credit on my dividends.

Now Im happy to get a refund but also scratching my head worrying if this is actually correct or if ChatGPT led me astray… for the record the tax credit only accounts for half the refund, the other half is from my company overpaying in taxes last year.
