Hi guys, on june 17th I will live in tokyo for 1 year with a working holiday visa. I have savings to last me for a year, already taking in consideration rent, cost of living etc…
At some point in my one year stay I may try to find a part time job (I believe I can legally work part time with working holiday visa but not full time) just to help a little financially if necessary. For this part time job I'm not sure wether it will be with a japanese company or something overseas I can do online (ex. For a portuguese company since I'm portuguese)
If I do start working at some point in my stay in Japan, how do taxes work, and what are my legal obligations? Apologies for the super vage question, I'm just confused about the legal bureaucracy of it all – I'm a little paranoid about being in debt to the japanese government out of my little knowledge lol
If I work for an overseas company part time, will the % of japanese taxes be deducted from my salary? Will the company have that responsibility since they're hiring a foreigner employee with a portuguese tax number in portugal but is currently living in japan? Or will I have to file papers on my own to pay the japanese government what I owe them by earning income while staying in japan, even if not from a japanese entity?
And if I work with a japanese company who already pays me with the tax deduction, will I have to do anything tax related after my 1 year stay?
Also, my savings are in euros which I believe makes it somehow more valuable than yen. When opening a japanese bank account upon arrival (also, if I decide not to work at all for all the 1 year stay, it's still worth opening an account, right?), how much of my money in euros should I transfer to yens? It it better if I hold on to my savings in my portuguese bank account?
For whoever has the patience to explain everything to me, I deeply appreciate it. Forgive me for not knowing much, but I really want to learn.
