I am half Japanese and I found out only a couple of years ago that I am Ryūkyūan through a DNA test. My Japanese mother was very defensive and refused to acknowledge our heritage (and hinted that she’d been discriminated against due to her darker skin and non-“mainlander” appearance).
My family has one of the most popular surnames in all of Japan, and as far as I am aware, all the male relatives (I get my background from my great grandfather from my mother’s paternal side who was Ryūkyūan) also had this surname. I know where they are located, however, and I know at the very least that I do have Ryūkyūan ancestry. I know it’s difficult to go off of so little info, but I’d appreciate any and all advice and feedback. I feel like a big piece of me is missing.
