Can someone please explain to me what I need to do to ensure my phone works in Japan. I have an Android s20 and I see so much info online about unlocking it and getting a new sim card and setting it up with a service provider in Japan like Sakura or Docomo and I'm still very confused.

You need an unlocked phone or you can buy a phone in Japan. I used AU because they also give this AU card that works as credit card. I was able to do lots of online shopping thanks to that 🙂
Which country and provider is the phone from?
Also it depends if you use nfc to make contact less payments. Countries use different security settings on their chips, so you may not be able to set-up any form of contact less payments on your American phone using japanese bank cards. So you’ll need a japanese phone for this.
It’s best to check compatability if you plan to use this feature.
The Samsung Galaxy s20 is indeed unlocked (I also have one from outside of Japan which I have been using for more than 2 years with no issues including set up). I have been using Sakura since arriving in Japan over 2 years ago which was extremely easy to set up (the s20 also has a dual sim feature, so I can also keep my other sim in my phone too).
This is a fairly basic concept.
Should start sending people to Chatgpt at this stage.
Only thing you need to ask:
Is your phone on a phone plan in your home country?
Is it locked to that company’s phone service?
The only other issue, does your phone support the Japanese cellular networks?
1. Unlock your phone
2. Port your current phone number to Google Voice (optional but preferable)
3. Get Japanese SIM
