Hello everyone. This is a question that I hope former JETs could answer for me. I am ending my contract this year and while cleaning out my apartment I’ve noticed lots of damaged flooring. When I inherited the apartment, it was full of furniture that I didn’t think of moving at the time. Also, the agent didn’t come with me to survey the apartment. I was naive and didn’t investigate every part of the apartment for damage and the videos I took in the beginning did not show the flooring issues. Basically, I’m worried I will be fined for the flooring damage of my predecessors as the landlord hasn’t been looking at the condition for the past 7 years it’s been a JET apartment. I’ve only been here for a year. Are there any laws or free resources I could reference if the landlord tries to make me pay for these surprise damages? Thanks.
I don’t have a successor, but if there are any incoming JETs lurking here, make sure to report EVERYTHING in the beginning. Request an agent to look at the apartment. Don’t just accept the key and leave because the agent is “busy with the next client.” You may not have a successor either and find surprises when cleaning out the pad.
