Basically the title. When you run out of sick leave (our BOE has 5) I assumed you took unpaid leave because that’s what other people I know have done. My supervisor says we don’t do that. Do y’all have this issue?
But general rule is no and if you disappear without saying why then you will be terminated as a breach of contract.
If that happens some COs will make you take annual leave to make up for the days. Some JETs fight back on using that, but it depends on your CO.
I have done 休職 when I was out for medical reason. I didn’t really ask for it. They put me on it automatically after I reached the limit for sick leave.
So did your supervisor say what would happen?
We get 5 days unpaid leave for returning to our home country. That’s it as far as I’m aware.
Depends on your contract and your contracting organization.
Sick leave is usually only reserved for hospitalization or severe illness. You also will sometimes need a 診断書 or medical note.
Some CO don’t allow for us to take sick leave, even with a note. Some don’t require it and give it freely on top of your nenkyu.
If you’re sick more than 5 days you should speak to your CO as every CO is different. Mine gives me 20 days paid sick leave on top of 20 days nenkyu for example. If you’re genuinely sick sick and have medical proof I wouldn’t worry too much as there should be some sort of leave that you can take. Speak to your CO!
it really depends on your boe, but you should be sure how many days of paid leave you have.
paid leave and sick leave are handled separately by my boe. my boe allows unpaid leave in certain circumstances, but generally, paid leave only becomes unpaid once you run out of paid leave. they also let me use paid leave for pretty much anything i want.
sick leave is typically meant to be used for severe illness/hospital stays though. even though you only have 5, i doubt you would need to use all of them. you can use paid leave for regular sicknesses and routine doctor visits.
It’s in your contract. So get your hands on that and check your policy. For me, the answer was yes. For others it might be different. Also, you should look at the different kinds of leave in the contract, and see which applies to your situation.
They should have gone over your contract with you on the first day to have you review everything and sign it and given you a copy. Go get that if you don’t have it
