Why are there already 3 Juniors announced for WTL? Is NJPW no longer caring about weight classes and divisions?

We've got:

  • Tana and JADO
  • Naito and Hiromu
  • Taichi and TAKA

But why? Is it due to injuries—maybe too many heavyweights are sidelined? Or is it a budget issue, where NJPW doesn’t want to bring in teams from overseas?

One of the things I love about NJPW is the clear separation between weight classes, with each class having its own titles, tournaments, and spotlight. Junior vs. Heavyweight or true open-weight matches should be rare, special events that feel like a big deal. So, I’m honestly disappointed to see Juniors in the WTL.

The only reason I can think of that this makes sense is if they’re trying to elevate the Strong Openweight Tag Team Championships, and maybe the winners of WTL will challenge for those belts instead of the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Titles. But even then, I thought part of the recent ‘rebuild’ was to streamline the title picture, getting rid of belts like the Strong titles, KOPW, etc.

What do you guys think?
