Hi everyone, I'm 27 years old with a Master's degree in History. I currently live on campus in China with my 21-year-old Japanese girlfriend, who is also a student. She is pregnant and considering moving back to Japan to get married. I'm concerned about my future career prospects. I know I would need to pursue a PhD to become a university professor, but I’m aware that the humanities are losing relevance in Japan. I would like to know, what are the realistic job opportunities I could have in Japan once married, considering my current situation and the changes in the academic field? Are there options outside of academia that could make use of my background in History?
I've heard that the spouse visa in Japan gives you access to any job. What exactly does this mean? Does it mean that by marrying a Japanese citizen, I won’t have any work restrictions and can work in any sector, even outside academia? Are there any limitations or additional requirements I should be aware of regarding this visa?
