Hi everyone I’m (30M) a photographer/studio owner from Toronto Canada and my wife (30F) is Japanese and moved to Canada in 2017.
We’re considering purchasing a place in Japan (Tokyo or Fukuoka) and splitting our time between Canada and Japan in a few years. Since I’m self employed as a photographer, I’m hoping I can do something similar (maybe geared more towards foreigners), or run a studio space… or something in the creative realm as I don’t want to default to working as an English teacher (although that would be something I’m open to doing part time if job opportunities like that exist)
A few questions I had while figuring out how I’d want my work life in Japan to look like:
- How feasible is my plan to try to be a photographer in Japan, especially one that’s geared more towards foreigners?
- Does anyone know how the market is for studio spaces? I’ve done some googling around and have a very basic understanding but I really want to hear first hand experiences
- Do any of you know people that have gone through a similar route/similar situation?
- What other possible job/business opportunities are there that are even slightly related?
A bit more info about me:
– I really enjoy business building so I’d prefer some sort of work where I can work for myself
– I’ll be enrolling in a full immersion Japanese language program in April 2025 and will be doing my best to keep up with it in preparation for the move in the future
– I also plan to take a English language teaching course sometime in the next couple of years before the move so that I at least have a certificate for teaching
– We’re also considering purchasing something a little bigger so that we could use the extra space in our home/building as an airbnb or airbnb experience or studio or something… very up in the air and just tossing ideas out there
Also if you or anyone you know is a photographer/creative in Tokyo, I would love for an opportunity to meet up for a coffee when I’m in Tokyo mid Feb 2025! I’ll be there essentially doing my first real step of research for this move.
