Hello everyone!
As the title says, I am considering moving to Japan after I finish my PhD program. I am in a pretty niche field (education, but not English) and aim to be at an intermediate if not advanced level of Japanese by the time I finish my program in about 3 years.
I wanted to reach out and gather insight from others who have been in similar spots. As with moving to anywhere new, I have some concerns. I currently am from the US, and we definitely have our problems, but I believe the biggest issue I am contemplating is the population decline of Japan. I also had a concern regarding the economy, but that seems to be turning around (yay!) I understand the working culture of Japan is a bit extreme, however looking at a prospective university, we get plenty of time off due to breaks and national holidays.
So TLDR; those of you that are contemplating a move, what concerns did you have? And those that have visited or live in Japan; are any of these concerns over exaggerated and not really perceived as a big deal? Maybe I’m looking at this with rose tinted glasses and my perception will change, who knows. Thanks for your input!
