Thanks in advance for any answers.
So, my wife is currently applying as an ALT. I have a remote contract position that pays well in excess of what she would make as an ALT, even with the 28 hour restriction. My company is not based in Japan, nor does it have an entity there. I am working with them to, potentially, end up being my EOR. But, for the sake of the answer here, let's assume that does not play out.
I see some confusing information regarding income status for dependents. It seems as though I can still be on a dependent visa; However, I would not qualify as a financial dependent. Will I lose/potentially lose dependent visa status if we go this route? There seems to be a distinction between dependent immigration status and dependent tax status. I am more than happy to pay the needed taxes and plan to do such, but I want to make sure this situation is viable long term.
I'm confused as the implications of this and what it would mean for me if we were to move forward with this plan. I am planning to discuss things further with an immigration lawyer, but I was hoping to be a bit more informed first.
