Hi everyone,
I’m 22, graduated 7 months ago, and working as a Compensation Analyst (soft HR). Moving to Japan has always been my dream, and now I’m weighing two options:
1. Apply for MEXT grad school (Public Policy or Humanities).
2. Do a short-term language program, then work.
My brother already lives in Osaka, and I can stay with him while he helps with job hunting and settling in. I’m currently studying Japanese at N3 level, and I’m an extrovert who loves networking and having a big social life. I’m worried that if I choose the language school + work path, I may not make enough meaningful connections and feel isolated.
Grad School (MEXT) Pros & Cons
Pros:
•Great opportunity for lasting social circles (clubs, orgs, etc.)
•I miss being a student and enjoy a structured, vibrant campus life
•A more relaxed pace before diving into a full career
Cons:
•Less money due to the student visa (28 hrs of part-time work)
•A potential setback in career growth (spending 2 years in school instead of working)
•Degree might not be as valuable in corporate settings
Language School + Work Pros & Cons
Pros:
•No career halt, immediate work experience
•More financial stability
Cons:
•Risk of isolation, fewer opportunities to build social circles
My Dilemma
I value both a strong social life and career development. Are there any short-term programs in Kansai (around Osaka) that could offer a student experience while still allowing me to transition into work?
My Questions
1.Thoughts on grad school vs. language school + work in Japan?
2.Will grad school guarantee lasting social circles, or is it hard to build connections while working in Japan?
3.Do you know of any short-term programs in the Kansai region with a strong student life vibe?
Looking forward to your experiences and advice—thanks!
