Just Finished My Application – But a Question

I just submitted my application for the 2025 ALT cycle. However, as I prepare my moving logistics, I have been having some concerns.

First off, I don't drive anymore. I am an environmentalist and actually sold my last car (in Michigan, USA) 8 months ago. I now use my high-powered E-bike for everything I do. It's not only much more environmental & sustainable than any EV or ICE car, but also more practical too than most other E-bikes. I do not plan on buying or owning another unsustainable vehicle ever again.

My concerns come in because if I do get a suburban or Inaka placement, I would like to ship my bike over. However, Japan has extremely strict E-bike laws compared to the US (I am assuming lobbying from the auto industry and safety concerns in urban areas). I have figured out how to pack the batteries and bike, but the issues come on when I actually get the bike to Japan. The bike is a fat tire E-bike with dual batteries in parallel. It tops out at 42-45mph and has a 3.3kw peak motor, 1.5kw nominal. It holds 100lbs on the rear rack and I usually cruise to not stress out the motor or batteries at 30-40mph. The range is around 70-140 miles per battery set (I have 2 sets so it actually is 140-280 miles of range depending on the peddle assist mode). This is all from the manufacturer too. It is classified as class 2 from the manufacturer but can be unlocked from the settings screen.

I do not mind registering and insuring it (I already have optional insurance in Michigan). But can anyone guide me on the process of registering it, insuring it, and license? And what classification of vehicle it would be considered? Moped, motorcycle, etc.?

I use this bike for everything – running errands, grocery shopping for a whole week at a time, visiting friends/family, etc. Thank you!
