Moving to Japan—Phone & SIM Card Advice Needed

I’m moving from Canada to Japan in two weeks to teach English, and I’ve almost got everything sorted—but I’m unsure what to do about my phone.

I want to keep my Canadian number and be able to receive SMS messages for authentication purposes while I’m away. My plan was to use NumberBarn (https://www.numberbarn.com/) to park my number. Is this the best approach, or are there better options?

For my phone plan in Japan, I found IIJmio, which seems like a solid option. Has anyone used them before? Will it be difficult to sign up once I arrive in Japan? https://www.iijmio.jp/hdc/visitors/en/

Would it be a good idea to get a travel eSIM in advance so I have service immediately upon arrival? I’ll be traveling with my mom, and she’ll have an eSIM as well.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

(I will be teaching in Hofu but arriving in Tokyo and staying there for my first night.)
