Does anyone have any insights into how passive income works with sponsored dependant visa?

Currently looking into my options for coming to Japan – this will likely be with my wife as an ALT.

I am an indie game developer and I know on a dependent visa you can't work for more than a certain amount of hours each week. But how does this relate to passive income from previous games if I don't work on a game whilst there (or work on it for the allowed hours each week)?

I also have a YouTube channel that is monetized. Say I make no new content on this channel but the videos I already have on there generate a little income. So technically I'm not "working" but I do have passive income.

Anyone in the same boat?

  1. Are you in USA or another country.

The spouse may not be able to work in the country you live in. But if their work is in a country they are legally allowed to work without a visa, there shouldn’t be any worry as long as you pay your taxes.

The dependent visa only applies to work within the country you will live in and be paid in.

Just be sure to read your taxes. The USA will require income taxes to be paid – and you may have to pay twice for work done in Japan (paid to Japanese government and USA if salary is over so much a year ).

Japanese taxes are often due in full at the end of the year.

Do some research because laws do change. I haven’t worked in Japan for the past 10 years.
