Navigating paid 10-day time off entitlements in Japanese workplaces

In Japanese workplaces employees are legally entitled to 10 days of paid time off per year after six months of continuous employment.

While I imagine the customary lead time employees give companies varies from workplace to workplace, is there any legal reason preventing an employee in Japan from simply declaring their intention to take time off on a specific date, rather than requesting permission from their boss?

Do employees have the right to just up and take time off, even though it might be rude?
