I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm wondering how many people came into JET with zero Japanese, but was able to achieve an Intermediate-Advanced level. I'm currently self-studying using AnkiDroid, Human Japanese, and Wanikani (hopefully I'm on the right track). I know many have said they were accepted with no Japanese, but if I get in I don't want stay at a low level. I'd like to be able to talk to Japanese people and make friends. I've lived in other countries without knowing the language and quite frankly, it's a pain to navigate. When you arrived in Japan as an ALT, what did you do to learn Japanese? Did it affect your experience negatively or positively?
