Is Keio Media Design (KMD) the Right Choice for Me? Seeking Honest Opinions from Current/Former Students

Hi everyone,

I’m considering applying to the Keio Media Design (KMD) Master’s Program for September 2025, and I’d love to hear insights from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with the program.

  1. My Background & What I’m Looking For

    • I have a media and communications background, with experience in social campaigns, event organising, short films, and media projects.
    • My university focused heavily on practical experience, so I didn’t do much academic research or write formal academic papers; I did most of the things mentioned above during my university time.
    • I’m not looking for a research-heavy master’s program—I want a practical, hands-on learning environment where I can work on real projects and gain industry connections.
    • I’m also an international student, so how KMD supports non-Japanese students is also a point.

  2. My Concerns & Questions

    1. Is the program truly practical, or is it more academic than advertised?
    2. Are there real-world industry projects, collaborations, and internships? Or do students mainly do theoretical work?
    3. How much support do professors and faculty give students? Or are students expected to be completely independent?
    4. How welcoming is the program to international students? Have you felt well-supported, or is there a gap in how non-Japanese students are treated?
    5. What are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the KMD program?
    6. If you could go back, would you still choose Keio Media Design, or would you recommend another program instead?

I also welcome any recommendations on other Master/ University programs offered in English or mixed English-Japanese that highly prioritise practical experiences.

I’d appreciate any insights or experiences you can share; thank you in advance.
