Juminhyo and Sponsor of Visa

Good day everyone. My husband applied for Child of Japanese National COE and it was approved. We currently live in the US and his brother who lives in Okinawa helped him apply and is his sponsor for the visa. He is mailing the COE to us so that he can go to embassy in Los Angeles for the visa.

We would like to know, since his brother is sponsoring him does my husband have to show intent to live with him in Okinawa when he arrives in Japan? He is remotely employed in software with the OK to work from Japan, so he had a plan to arrive in Japan and secure a place near Osaka right away and apply for a dependent visa for myself afterward (I understand this takes a bit of time.)

Just wanted to check on how the juminhyo part works as my husband's mother (Japanese National living in the US) is insisting that he would have to to live with his brother because he could get in trouble as the sponsor otherwise. Thanks in advance.

  1. Not at all. Like, you can also be sponsored by friends, distant relatives, etc–that would be super weird if they expected you to live with them.

I’d guess almost nobody getting this visa as an adult is living with their sponsor
