How early should I start looking for a job?

My wife and I have decided we want to move to Japan! I'm thinking of doing a year of language prep + research before moving, so we're about to renew our lease.

Right now I am a software engineer in the United States. I'm aware of japan-dev/TokyoDev which have english-friendly/visa-sponsored (modern) jobs I can apply to. I will have 3 years of experience in August, which is about mid level for these jobs. I also have a Bachelor's in Computer Science.

Should I start applying for jobs right now? I'm wondering how long I should expect to be searching. I want to find the balance between having something locked down, and not moving too early. If I got a job, is it normal to have a start date a month or two in the future? (I mean if I've gotta move, I'm assuming they give you some time to sort everything out).

If there is anything else I should be aware of, let me know. Thank you!

edit: yes I have been to Japan before
