I was an ALT for a year and hated the job so much that I felt I had to leave Japan. However, even having spent more than a year in the country and then returned home, I can’t get the place out of my mind. I struggle to let go of the admittedly unrealistic idea of returning there someday.
I disliked the job I had, not the country Japan itself.
This brings me to my question: are there any good English teaching jobs available in Japan, in the opinion of this community?
For me, the ALT job was dull, empty, and purposeless. I spent hours and hours sitting at a desk with nothing to do. When I couldn’t find anything better and had to leave company housing, I felt I had no other option than leaving. I’ve only ever heard awful things about the private eikaiwa companies, so I doubt that is a good option.
For those of you who found decent work in English education in Japan, what was the route you took?
Thanks for reading. Honest thoughts appreciated.
