How do you perceive BYD Cars?

Hello everyone, I’m really curious about your thoughts on BYD cars now that they’re hitting the Japanese market for a while. As we all know that Japan is world-renowned for its incredibly reliable and high-quality automobiles, and that reputation sets a high bar.

How do you feel BYD measures up in terms of quality, performance, and trust?

Let’s say if you compare an atto 3 with bz4x or if you have an option which one you will pick and why?

  1. For an EV or BHEV, BYD is good (I think all BYD foreign sales are EVs only). It is probably better most what Nissan offers. Some Toyota BHEVs do get rated very highly for life time carbon emissions, so you can check them out.

In Europe, BYDs are somewhat above/comparable what Volkswagen offer similarly (this includes Audis and SEAT EVs).

Chinese cars are really not bad nowadays. In a matter of fact, they are quite good; if you are used to Japanese, Korean, and European cars, they feel very much home. Why not do a test drive to decide yourself?

  2. Never driven or owned one but they certainly have better exterior and interior designers than most car companies.

  3. Never driven or owned one but they certainly have better exterior and interior designers than most car companies.

  4. Zero trust, quality will be determined in time and performance is not really even a consideration until the first two metrics are met.

Currently I’d never consider buying one, but that might change in 10 or so years.

Edit – This thread should probably be titled “Praise BYD or get downvoted”

  5. BZ4X all the way. BYD is a toy car, cannot even compare it with Toyota in reliability. They might look cute or even cool; but underneath you are still driving a Chinese car, god knows what corners they cut. I personally would not put my safety in their hands

  6. I don’t want to financially support automotive Chinese manufacturers. Japanese or Korean only for me. That’s just my opinion. I vote with my wallet.

  7. 外国車の中でいつか売上がトップになると思うね。 コンパクトで安いから。

  8. Never owned one nor driven one. I suspect quality is fine but I’m not interested enough to switch over.

The way I see it, BYD has a brand problem and a marketing problem here. It’s trying to break into a market where domestic brands have reigned supreme for decades in terms of quality and value. Not only does it need to provide better value, they also need to convince consumers that their next big x-million yen purchase should be a BYD.

Chinese brands including BYD don’t exactly exude positivity in Japan for fairly obvious reasons and is therefore that much more difficult to market. I feel their marketing efforts is a reflection of their own feel for where they’re at right now, which is to say almost invisible in a place where things out of their control could go awry very quickly.
