I’m now living in Fukuoka and it’s my 8th year in Japan, got really a lot of stuff in my home. Car and motorbike also. I’m going to work in Kyoto, maker in 中京区, since 2026.
I had visited Kyoto many times but still have no idea which parts of Kyoto are good for living. I wish it takes no longer than 30min from the place to company by car.

You’ll probably want to look at options in Iwakura or Fushimi if you’re coming with a car and motorbike; options within the city with parking will be pretty expensive. Commuting to Nakagyo-ku within 30 minutes by vehicle is feasible from either location, though if you have the money for it you might look over around Hyakumanben or Enmachi, or even closer to Arashiyama. Ohara is a little far out and you’ll certainly have more snow which makes it harder to commute in winter sometimes, but the cost of living will be a bit cheaper. There are options closer “in town,” but it will depend on your income – and it’ll likely need to be quite a lot for car and bike parking. That’s not to say it’s impossible but you won’t find many options for houses in the central wards with car parking for what I would call a reasonable price.
I’ll also be moving to the Kyoto area in early 2026. I’m looking to buy a house in Otsu, I visited a couple of houses in February and loved the area. Over 3 weeks, we went to 6 different Airbnb to get an idea of what it would be like to live in some places in Kyoto or around, we loved Otsu the most, we disliked Toji area (south of Kyoto station in general).
I’m not going to commute to Kyoto everyday though so being a bit far from the city center is less of a problem.
