Hello. My wife was born in the U.S. but she holds dual citizenship (I know about the controversies surrounding this). Our young son is also a dual citizen of the U.S. and Japan. I (40M) am mostly Korean with some Japanese ancestry. When we got married and had our son, we had him obtain citizenship and I believe we have our own Koseki registry now. Both of our parents' live in Korea and Japan and we want to be closer to them. Currently, I am self-employed, but with the situation in the U.S., getting new contracts has become a struggle. Cost of living in California is just too much, and growing up in Korea, I felt safe walking alone even as a 5 year old – and I want my children to experience a more care-free childhood like I had. I don't want to constantly worry as a parent in L.A.
We visit Japan often to see family and friends, so we have a good network there so that we won't feel too lonely. My Japanese isn't great, but I am fluent in Korean, so I have no trouble picking up Japanese, and will be taking lessons since we speak to our son in all three languages. Korean and Japanese differ a lot, but there are a lot of familiarities, so I have no trouble adapting to the culture and lifestyle (I think I conform to it better than my wife lol).
The biggest issue is what kind of visa I would need, and looking for jobs. Would I be able to easily obtain a Spouse Visa? Given that she's technically not allowed to have dual citizenship, I'm wondering if this will be an issue if I try to obtain a Spouse Visa. Money-wise, I am a disabled military veteran, so I get a monthly pension. But I don't want to sit around doing nothing. Ideally, I'd get a global remote job and work from home, but it seems almost impossible to find these days. IF we do move to Japan, we wish to live in the suburbs as city life is not for me, and country life is not for her. I've been researching this for a quite a long time, but struggling to know where to start off with everything.
Will we need to go and find a home to rent or purchase first before doing the actual move? What job prospects do I have?
