I work for a global provider of customer experience solutions and tech in Europe, and last year I had the chance to go on a business trip to our Osaka site (same company) for a month and a half. It seems they liked my work because now, a few months later, they've reached out to me with an offer for an 18-month contract.
Deal as of current talks is:
- For 50-80% of the 18 months, they'll cover my rent.
- They'll pay for my one-way ticket to Osaka.
- I'll be going alone, so I won't know anyone there and my japanese is not good at all, as I've been learning it on-off for the past 3 months. There'll be a translator on site though.
- The salary they're offering is slightly higher than what I currently make in Europe.
- They'll let me go to go back to my country on big holidays for a few weeks.
Using a calculator (https://jp.talent.com/), I found that the net salary would be 386,167 yen per month after tax, which is about an 11-12% raise from my current salary, again net. I work in IT, so the job is quite technical.
My question is: Is this a good salary for a single person in Osaka, do you recon I should negotiate a higher one, because the role itself is a small step back from the role I also have in Europe? Would I be able to save up nicely?

Thats really good for Osaka, if they cover your rent you’ll live pretty well.
It’s higher than what you’re currently getting AND they’ll pay the majority of your rent. I’d take it
Yeah that is a pretty good salary. I’d also take it
If you don’t want to do it, I’ll happily take it.
That’s a great salary for Osaka but hey if the option to negotiate for more is there then don’t waste the opportunity. Give it a try. Worse case is you still get more than your usual pay anyway.
Coolabah Sports Café is a warm welcoming environment for foreigners trying to fit into Japan
That’s so bad. You should decline. Also, gimme their contact info so I can help insulting them.
