Got yelled at on the Subway

Had a bit of a strange experience. I am travelling with my family here in Japan and we've been here for about a week and a half. We were on a fairly early metro to board our shinkansen to Nagoya and while we were seated, I was just catching up quietly with my brother in law while seated. We weren't loud by any stretch, but about 5 mins later a elderly woman seated across from us darted out of her seat and confronted us and started going off fairly intensely in Japanese. Of course none of us could understand so we just watched her rant to us in silence while the other passengers watched as well. I think I got another gentlemen nodding along but can't be sure. We weren't really loud at all and other folks were conversing close by as well. So not really sure what it was all about. I smiled and was fairly nonplussed but we just let it happen. To make matters even stranger, as her stop arrived she got up and bowed to us and smiled and said some form of arigato gozaimas and went cheerily on her way.

Did I miss something? Would just like to know if anyone has experienced something like this.
