My university is offering exchange programs for Kyoto University and Tohoku University, and I plan on going during the spring semester.
Kyoto program runs from 4/1 – 9/30 which is quite long, but I've seen online can just leave whenever after exams are finished.
The Tohoku program strangely runs from 4/1 – 6/7, which makes me lean towards Kyoto because I understand moving somewhere takes time to adjust.
From what I've heard about the cities, Kyoto is very overcrowded with tourists and main attractions overhyped compared to side streets. Even though I am a tourist myself, I would prefer to avoid dealing with this for months straight. I've heard Sendai is a chill smaller city but doesn't have as much to do. I'm still considering it if Kyoto overpopulation is too bad.
Is Kyoto overpopulation a big problem near Kyoto University? Which would you choose and why?
