Clearly Shohei promoting onigiri as a snack has had massive economic repercussions
“According to the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations (Zen-Noh), which secured nearly 90% of the auctioned rice, only around 55,000 metric tons of rice was passed on to wholesalers out of the 200,000 tons that the association received in April.”
Morons, that company has no financial incentive to release the rice and yet they keep giving it to them
This is because both the demand and supply curves for rice in Japan are highly inelastic — they are effectively vertical.
Last year was a bad harvest due to lack fo water, source: my father in law is a rice farmer
I find it hard to believe that tourists, eat enough rice to effect the prices this much 🤔
Because rice are yummy, and we can’t stop eating it.
Bad supply.
Their farming industry has gotten behind for so long. Since the agriculture industry is heavily protected by the government from foreign competitors, they’ve become complacent.
With the aging farmers and lack of good technology, the price will just go up to an insane level that the normal people will starve. Only till then that the government will finally try to do something (like opening the flood gate for foreign rice without tariffing the fck out of them).
