‘98% suspicious’: Japan bank employee saves man from 100,000-yen romance scam loss

Kumiko Jingu, 51, a section head at Shinonome Shinkin Bank's Shimonita Branch in the Gunma Prefecture town of Shimonita, prevented a man from falling victim to a romance scam by alerting the police when he attempted to transfer 100,000 yen to a woman he met online. She judged the transfer suspicious due to the unusual nature of the request and the lack of information about the recipient. The man had been communicating with the woman for several months and was promised interest on his deposit.

This was the second time for her to receive a certificate of appreciation from Gunma Prefectural Police.
