correct me if I’m wrong, but who tf would want their salary via paypay instead of having it direct deposited into one’s bank?
I cannot fathom why anyone would want to receive their pay outside of direct deposit.
i always get a mild shock when i leave the tokyo area and no one wants to take ID and PayPay and stuff.
also get a shock when i travel to nagoya and none of their IC card topup machines in the subway will work with my mobile pasmo
Cash loving Japan reluctant switch to cryptocurrency salary payments.
Direct deposit has been a thing for years here how are the apps any more convenient?
It’s fine for short term gigs or very limited part time jobs I guess. Otherwise there’s no incentive in opting for this method.
I don’t think any person in world wants that
why the hell would anyone want that in the first place ?
Just get your salary in bank deposit directly. why would I trust a company that could close my account whenever they want without having to legally give me my money back that was inside ?
This reminds me of my first job in Japan. Payday was once a month and a couple elderly guys would come feom accounting with huge bags of cash and they would pay everyone their monthly salary in cash. It blew my mind. This was in a very small city in Yamagata…. Super inaka.
Quick! Let’s use an uninsured digital payment platform to receive our salary… what dumb idea.
I think Japan needs to be brought up whenever Americans resist making larger denomination coins because they’re afraid of carrying around the weight.
I appreciate OP saving my time. Usually I have to read at least part of an article to realize that it’s rage bait. This headline though…..
Just corpos looking to cut down on salary related fees. Probably cheaper to pay a salary through an app than a direct deposit.
This article aside, having a bunch of cash around kinda makes sense for earthquake prone Japan. You don’t want to be cashless when that happens
Almost every employer other than the smallest shops do direct deposit, and have done for decades. Using an “app” is a totally different thing. Banks are highly regulated and guaranteed. Why would anyone want to be paid via some app? That’s not cash loving. That’s just normal.
If my employer, for example, said we are increasing your annual salary from X number of yen to the same number of PayPay points I would probably die on the spot.
Most of my local businesses that take cashless won’t even accept refunds on cashless purchases. It is inferior money.
Off topic, but can anyone explain how Japan historically handled salaries, say, from the postwar era up until the early digital era? Since checks aren’t a thing here and it was heavily cash-based until only recently, how were people paid? Were accounting depts giving out cash payments to salarymen or was direct deposit adopted earlier here than in the west (becuase I only remember it becoming a common thing in the 90s/00s in the US)?
No thank you. There’s no good reason why salary shouldn’t go into a bank account.
This article is written by foreigners?
I’ve been living in Japan for the last 27 years and have always been paid through direct deposit. That said, I was surprised at how cash-based Japan was when I first moved here, but so much is (or can be, at least) app-based now.
“Workers with brains refuse to be further exploited so that another company can benefit off their work”. There we go, fixed that stupid headline.
Cash is better anyways.
Cash wont vanish in the event of a disaster. App based payments will all go down when an earthquake or tsunami hits and power gets cut
