Surviving summer in Oki

Any tips? I’ve tried to keep 2L of water a day in my routine, bought those cooling sprays but still. Today I almost fainted. I mean my face hit the ground but I was fully conscious. Pretty sure it was a combination of seasonal flu and heat stroke or smth. I was feeling sick earlier and when later while walking (2pm) I just couldn’t see anymore. Thankfully someone helped me.

  1. Water and dont do prolonged activity outside. 2L honestly isn’t enough if you’re gonna be outside. It’s only going to get worse. You need to get acclimated. July and august going to be way worse than this.

  2. If you’re gonna be outside working, those fan vests let your sweat evaporate so your body can cool down a bit. Taking breaks in the shade and proper nutrition go a long way too. Make sure you’re getting electrolytes too, as just water doesn’t replace all the salts you sweat out

  3. Just remember that heatstroke is when your internal temperature is too hot. If you have a fever you really need to keep cool.

  4. Friend, today was not really that hot or humid…the worst is yet to come.

  5. Keep some salt candy in your pocket. It will help you much. Instead of 2 lt of water only, you can drink pocari or aquarius as well. But, be careful because you can get overhydrate, and it can cause you fatigue, headaches, and muscle cramps as well.

2 Lt of liquid means water, electrolyte, and even your food. During summer, you may need to retain your water level inside your body. Water will be easily evaporate through sweating if you are outside. In the morning, if it’s possible you can eat 1 portion of watery fruits eaten with a little bit of salt. Wear light color clothing as it can repel the heat, and if it’s possible clothes that is easy to dry.

UV cut umbrella also can be use to alleviate the heat when you are outside. It also protecting you from sunburn. Summer is not yet to come, and it will get hotter. Acclimate yourself, and if you feel dizzy, find shade and drink electrolyte. Hope you will be okay in coming months.

  6. Keep up your salt intake I’ve been here for 3 years and it’s been a huge help

  7. You need to provide a lot more context, we don’t know your age, what you’re acclimated to, and what you’re trying to do outside.

One tip I haven’t seen here is avoid outdoors activities in the hottest part of the day if you can. A lot of people here saying no sustained outdoors activity at all. But it’s doable at the right times of day, given acclimation, and your overall level of fitness – your age, health and how else you take care of yourself.

It will get hotter as people said, to the point it barely seems to coolmoff at night, but it’s still easier to do thinga without the full sun bearing down on you, and your akin will also be safer.

if you’re new to the island try to take your outdoor walks earlier and later in the day. Acclimating can take some time… like even months or years of continuing to gradually suffer less – depending on what you’re used to and the other factors above.

  8. No idea of your circumstances or where you are in Okinawa, but generally…

Don’t forget to replenish salts as well when walking. I would usually grab an ice cream or something cold as opposed to just water.

    Take frequent breaks.

  9. That all depends on you and what you’re used to. I lived there 4 yrs, being military I had limited choice of clothing when exerting myself in the heat of the summer, but I was also younger and in good health. Light clothing, cover your skin, water is good, but electrolytes are equally valuable. If you aren’t in poor health or shape and you’re passing out just walking around, you might want to get checked out.

  10. Just take it easy outside until you acclimate. Drink water. You’ll get used to it.

If you’re sick anyway, that probably had a lot to do with it.

  11. Dude, you have *the flu*. Nothing is going to make this heat and humidity bearable.

What you need is rest, fluids, and to stay out of the heat.

  12. 900mg of Ibuprofen and as much water as you can possibly consume in a day.

  13. How long have you been here? Your body will get acclimatised to the heat if you let it get used to it slowly. And understand the symptoms of heat stroke / exhaustion etc.

Don’t go outside when you’re sick. Drink plenty of water. Go for short walks and allow your body to get used to the heat. Eventually you’ll get used to it.

  14. Okinawa is damn hot in summer. That’s all there is to it. Live with it. At least you have a/c. My father in laws house doesn’t!!

  15. Geez man. You’ll get used to it. We go on 6 hour bike rides in summer. Beautiful! Drink lots of sports drinks and stay moving.
