Title: Has anyone gotten a 技術・人文知識・国際業務 visa with a technical degree from a vocational institute?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the process of moving to Japan for work and I'm facing some uncertainty regarding the work visa process.

I graduated from TECSUP, a recognized Higher Technological Institute (Instituto Tecnológico Superior) in Peru, where I earned a "Bachiller Técnico", which translates to "Technical Bachelor's Degree". It's a nationally accredited higher education degree in engineering, issued after completing a 3-year advanced technical program focused on practical and applied sciences.

I recently received a job offer from a Japanese company in the field of mechanical design (スマートファクトリー / Smart Factory). The company is sponsoring me for the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services (技術・人文知識・国際業務) visa.

However, there’s some ambiguity about whether my academic background fits the requirements of this visa category, as I come from a technical institute rather than a traditional academic university. I’ve already consulted with immigration lawyers in Japan, and they say it’s possible to obtain the visa, but it will require a well-prepared explanation letter (理由書) that clearly shows how my academic background is related to the job duties.

I'm reaching out to ask:

  • Has anyone here gone through a similar situation?
  • Do you know of any successful cases involving a "Bachiller Técnico" or a vocational/technical degree being accepted for this visa category?
  • Any tips on preparing the 理由書 or what documents to include?

Any advice, experience, or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
