Best island for non-drivers

Hi everyone,

My partner and I are planning a trip to Japan in October. We already did Tokyo and Kyoto last year, we will be doing Kyoto again plus some other places on the mainland, but would like to end the trip with a couple of days on one of the islands just to relax/swim.

Neither of us drive, and I heard that some of the islands are difficult to get around if you're not renting a car (e.g. Ishigaki). We are just looking for somewhere with nice beaches to relax, beautiful nature. Doesn't really need to be a lot 'to do', as we will be exhausted from the rest of the trip and just looking to relax and soak up the island vibes.

Turtles would be a big plus!! And a nice hotel.

We were thinking of the main Okinawa island but the beaches don't look particularly great? Open to any of the islands including the Kerama islands etc..

  1. The main island is more accessible by bus than people give it credit for. They’re not fast or as reliable as the mainland (especially during rush hour where traffic in the city is horrendous), but you can get around to basically all the tourist hotspots even if sometimes you have to do a 15-minute walk on either side.

There are some nice beaches on the main island, though obviously not as nice as you’d get on the more remote islands. The other problem with smaller islands is that if you only have a couple of days, and the weather isn’t nice, you’re going to be stuck with nothing to do. At least on the main island if the weather isn’t good for beaches, you can go to the aquarium or something.
