Racism in Japan what’s your experience

Hey fellow Redditors,

I'm a black American student planning to study and live in Japan in January 2026, and I'm curious to hear from others who have had these experiences. Have any of you faced discrimination or challenges in Japan due to your skin tone? If so, what were some of the most significant hurdles you faced, and how did you overcome them?

everyone who have lived or studied in Japan. What were some of the most surprising cultural differences you encountered, and how did you navigate them?

As someone who's about to embark on this adventure, I'd love to get some tips on how to fit in and avoid standing out in a way that might make me a target for discrimination. Are there any specific customs or practices I should be aware of? Are there any areas or neighborhoods in Japan that are more welcoming to international students, particularly those with darker skin tones?

I’d be interested to here from black Americans like myself but over races are good to I’d like to hear from everyone point of view and perspective and experience
