We left Tokyo in the early morning, catching a flight to Kagoshima on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu. Without stopping in the city, we took a ferry straight across the bay to Sakurajima, where the active volcano loomed above quiet coastal roads and steaming vents. Exploring the island under its constant plume of smoke was a humbling experience. Later in the afternoon, we returned to explore Kagoshima.
