In the recently announced Japanese Senate election, 522 candidates are competing for 125 seats, each advocating for their policies. To understand the themes that are gaining traction on social media, AI tools were used to analyze a massive amount of posts related to the election. Specifically, the AI tool “Talk to the City” was used to collect about 140,000 posts from X (formerly Twitter) between June 30 and July 2, just before the election was officially called. About 18,000 posts were randomly selected and analyzed.
Key Findings:
The analysis focused on posts related to election issues, as well as public expectations and demands about politics. The most common theme that emerged was negative opinions about the performance of politicians and political parties. Many people expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived insincerity of politicians:
- Discontent with Politicians’ Performances: Many posts criticized the tendency for politicians to focus on performance rather than genuine policy discussions. Comments included statements like:
- "We need politicians who offer sincere speeches and policies, not just empty performances."
- "I'm tired of two-faced politicians who only make promises for votes."
- "Campaign promises are just lies to get votes, nothing more."
Long-Term Vision:
Among the criticisms, there were also calls for politicians to have a long-term vision:
- "Politics isn’t about instant results, we need to think about outcomes 5 to 10 years ahead."
- "The country can’t run on just ‘feel-good’ promises. It requires more than that."
- "We need to choose politicians who genuinely look out for the people, or we won't have another chance."
This suggests that many voters are seeking politicians who not only speak with sincerity but also provide a more realistic and sustainable vision for the country’s future, beyond just short-term promises.
