A government survey shows that in Japan last year, the number of single-person households and elderly households (age 65+) reached record highs, while households with children hit a record low.
As of June, there were about 18.99 million single-person households, making up 34.6% of all households — the highest since records began in 1986.
Households with people aged 65 and older were next, with 17.21 million, or 31.4% — also the highest ever.
In contrast, households with children under 18 dropped to 9.07 million, or just 16.6%, the lowest on record.
Japan’s health ministry says this trend is due to more elderly living alone, rising rates of people staying unmarried, and fewer births.
