“If they think Japan ought to follow what America says as we depend heavily on them, then we need to work to become more self-sufficient in security, energy and food, and less dependent on America,” Ishiba told a TV news programme.
Isn’t this just like common sense? Self sufficiency doesn’t mean both sides lose, it helps Japan and doesn’t really separate from the US much.
I am really struggling to see how this is big news. “Japan should be able to feed itself, provide its own energy, and pay for its own defense.” Is being framed as “JAPAN BREAK AWAY FROM THE US THE WEST HAS FALLEN.”
New nuclear plants to curb lng imports are coming)
I’m all for Japan, but Japanese corporations have been aggressively moving capital overseas for a while. They’re not investing it here, so the government is simultaneously courting more foreign capital at home to rebalance its economic model. It’ll take time, but investing in domestic energy, food production, and defense hardware could buffer Japan against disruptive external shocks. It’s all about saving face here, so give just enough to keep the alliance stable, while positioning yourself to win on terms that matter long after this bullshit.
I hope Japan continues to increase trade with other countries also being bullied by the US, like Brazil, Canada, Mexico and many more.
So he wants to transfer dependence from the US to China.. Bad enough China been snapping up farmlands and property.
Hopefully they start to really like themselves up alongside Canada and EU/UK.
The US is a completely untenable partner and we’ve seen the complete dissolving of checks and balances there.
