Record 42 women win seats in Japan upper house election
July 21, 2025
TL;DR A record 42 women won seats in Japan’s House of Councillors election, surpassing the previous record of 35 set in 2022. Women won 33.6% of the total 125 seats up for grabs this year.
It’s very strange that Japanese women seem to be more xenophobic and nationalistic than men. The Sanseito party in Japan has a significant number of female members, and Uryu Hirano, an extreme right-winger who hates Chinese people and is very popular on the Internet, is also a woman.
Ok, but which party gained seats?
AKB42
Yeah but what’s their platform and which party they belong to? 😅
Sanseito promotes ideas that amount to restricting the freedom of women. Kamiya himself spoke how older women cannot give birth, showing what he thinks women are for. I don’t think this will help the birth rate, at all.
Younger generations tend to support parties like Kokumin and Sanseito, which are strongly opposed to increase of foreign nationals, while the elderly support the LDP, which is more pro foreign labor.
The LDP has long been known for supporting foreign labor, largely because its main backers include major corporations such as Toyota and only about 15% of its candidates are women.
In contrast, other parties actively recruit female candidates, resulting in a female representation of around 35–50%, regardless of whether the party is conservative or not. When the LDP loses seats, the number of female politicians automatically increases.
I dunno. I’ve had loads of success in the past dating Japanese women as a foreigner. I’ve never once been on a date with a Japanese man. What does that tell you about the ‘Japanese women are more xenophobic than Japanese men’ comments?
