75 people arrested in Kabukicho in six months for soliciting some targeting foreign tourists

In Tokyo’s Kabukicho district, a bustling entertainment area, the Metropolitan Police Department announced on the 24th that they arrested 75 women between January and June for allegedly soliciting prostitution. This is an increase of 40 arrests compared to the same period last year. About 40% of those arrested cited expenses related to hosts and concept cafes as their motivation for engaging in prostitution.

The Security Division reported that the average age of these women was 25, with nine teenagers arrested—a notable increase from last year. Nearly 80% of the women had experience working in sex-related businesses, with some being current or former employees. There were also university students among those arrested. Several women indicated financial hardship as their reason for soliciting, and the police are working with welfare organizations to provide support and encourage rehabilitation.

Additionally, there has been a rise in solicitation targeting foreign visitors. On the 22nd of this month, four women in their 20s were arrested under suspicion of violating the prostitution law. These women admitted to the charges, stating that they felt secure as foreigners are less likely to be undercover police officers. They began soliciting to repay debts to host clubs, finding it quicker to earn money compared to working in sex-related establishments.
